With its inception in 1973, Upper Mohawk Valley Model United Nations (UMVMUN) conference established a tradition of simulating the spirited diplomacy that is practiced in the United Nations and to provide future generations of leaders a chance to develop their skills and talents through public speaking, writing, and negotiation in an environment conducive to the diplomatic practices found within statesmanship. Our conference has been annually sponsored by the Upper Mohawk Valley chapter of the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNAUSA).

UMVMUN was first held at Utica College in 1973 and continued to be held there until 1998. Since then, the conference has been held at the renowned liberal arts colleges of Hamilton College (1999-2006, 2009, and 2011) and Colgate University (2007-2008, 2010, 2012, and 2013). Following the retirement of long-time advisers, Ms. Sherry Wright and Mr. John Slater, a coalition of advisers and experienced MUN delegates from the Mohawk Valley have been working diligently to modernize our cherished conference while maintaining UMVMUN traditions. One way that the conference has changed is its location. Starting in 2014, UMVMUN has been hosted by the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute in Utica.

At our conferences we host delegations from dozens of schools all across New York state. Our committees saw rigorous debate play out on a number of topics facing the international community. Since 2014, our conference has been documented via professionally composed video and photography. Starting in 2015, we implemented conference trained NGO representatives for the first time, which greatly expanded the depth and scope of the debate taking place at UMVUN.

A great deal of work and preparation is put forth each year for the eight months that lead up to the conference so that we can maintain and elevate the standards of UMVMUN past. Our conference leaders recognize, however, that without the research, dedication, hard work, and commitment of the delegates who attend our conference, our efforts are fruitless. Please join with us in making UMVMUN 2017 a conference to remember!
